National Consignment Day

The first Monday in October is National Consignment Day! This is a big day for Retail Therapy Consignment! The luxury resale site and now multiple brick and mortor store front, The RealReal, founded National Consignment Day in 2017 in partnership with Stella McCarthy to promote sustainable fashion. This holiday, along with shopping and selling via consignment, has gown significanlty in popularity. But how did consignment get started? Let's find out!

In the early 1900's the industrial revolution brought on the means to be able to have lots of items. Clothing being one of them. Discarded clothing was sold on pushcarts. The people buying these clothes were lower class citizens and this means of obtaining clothes was often looked down upon. After pushcarts came thrift stores. Religious organizations quickly saw that they could get people to donate items they no longer needed or wanted. They could then sell these items at very little cost. This method esentially killed multiple birds with one stone. It encouraged people to give items, that made them feel good about being charitable. It also met others needs at a fraction of the cost and turned a profit that helped the religious organizations fund operations. In the 1950's consignment stores started to pop up along side thrift stores. Thift stores were mainly to fund non profit organizations and consignment stores gave the consignee or owner of the items benefit and the remaining profits went back to the store owner. The word "consign" means to give something over into someone else's care.

Present day - the word "resale" is the most popular. And no longer is "resale, consignment or thrift" shopping looked down upon. Forbes even declared resale the "star of retail" in 2022. The resale sector is projected to have 10-15% growth in the next decade. There are many different forms of resale now, not just consignment. Retail Therapy Consignment offers the traditional consignment with several different percentage splits back to the consignee. Retail Therapy Consignment also offers cash buy outs. This option the owner of the merchandise will be paid up front for items. Retail Therapy Consignment has evolved over the years and adapted our process to the growing market.
